Sustainable Flow project brings a digital emission tool into everyday port operations
The Sustainable Flow project has reached a stage where the digital tools developed within the project are being widely tested in real port environments. As the project approaches its final phase, the Emission Monitor application has evolved based on user feedback and pilot testing, and the focus of the research has shifted toward evaluating its practical functionality and real-world benefits.
A user training session for the digital emission tool was held at the Port of Tallinn in November 2025. Presented by Awake.AI, the training gave representatives of the Port of Tallinn the opportunity to explore the application’s features and test it through practical exercises. Researchers Tuulia Sillanpää and Katariina Mankinen from SAMK participated in the training, gaining first-hand insight into the latest functionalities of the emission tool and learning more about the data it collects and produces. The aim of the training was to ensure that the tool meets the real needs of port operations. In February 2026, follow-up training on the use of the emission tool was organized for the ports of Pori and Rauma, where new features developed after the previous training session were introduced.
At the same time, open field testing of the Emission Monitor application is underway in all ports participating in the project. The testing focuses on evaluating the application’s usability, functionality, and its ability to support daily decision-making in port operations. Observation-based testing provides an effective way to identify both strengths and areas for improvement in the user interface at an early stage.

Insights gathered from testing are directly translated into development actions, which are prioritized based on their impact and available resources. Close cooperation between the project team and Awake.AI enables rapid improvements and ensures that the application continues to develop in a user-driven way. In late February 2026, a joint Demo Day was organized together with Awake.AI for the participating ports and stakeholders, showcasing the digital emission and decision-making tools.
The Emission Monitor provides ports with real-time emission data, monitoring capabilities, and tools for evaluating the impacts of different operational solutions. The aim of the field testing has been to ensure that the application is not only technically functional but also genuinely useful in everyday port operations and in planning for sustainable development.
