From Policy to Practice – Turning Maritime Goals into Action
International conventions, regulations and shared goals provide the foundation for safe, efficient and sustainable shipping. Their real impact, however, depends on how effectively they are translated into everyday practice on board ships, in ports and across the wider maritime sector.
This year, the theme of World Maritime Day is From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence. With the theme for 2026–2027, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) highlights the importance of turning international decisions, rules and commitments into practical action. For the first time, the World Maritime Day theme spans two years, emphasising the need for long-term work on implementation, capacity building and cooperation. According to IMO, putting policy into practice includes training, technical assistance, capacity building, and sharing knowledge and expertise among Member States and maritime stakeholders.
From research to practical solutions
Developing the maritime sector requires a strong connection between research and practice. At the SAMK Maritime Logistics Research Center, we develop solutions for the future of the maritime sector by bringing together research, practical operating environments and future competence needs. Our work covers areas including maritime efficiency and safety, digitalisation and automation, the green transition and Arctic maritime operations.
Across these areas, progress requires more than new targets or technological solutions. New knowledge needs to find its way into practice, technologies need to work in real operating environments, and people need the skills to use them effectively. Digitalisation and automation, for example, are changing the way ships and ports are operated, while the green transition is bringing new technologies, operating models and competence needs to the maritime sector.
For this reason, developing the maritime sector requires us to consider not only what needs to be done, but also how change can work in practice. Research has an important role to play in producing knowledge and solutions that can be applied in real-world operating environments and help the sector respond to changing requirements.
Building the maritime future together
The connection between goals, knowledge and practice is also central to the upcoming Who Leads the Future Maritime World? seminar, organised by the SAMK Maritime Logistics Research Center together with its partners in Rauma on 27 October 2026. The seminar will explore the future of the maritime sector from several perspectives, including winter navigation, security of supply, smart shipping, technology, security and future competence.
The maritime future will not be built by one organisation or through one solution. It requires cooperation between research and education, businesses, technology experts, authorities and other maritime stakeholders. It also requires the ability to turn new knowledge and solutions into practical applications and to develop expertise that responds to the changing needs of the sector.
The From Policy to Practice theme of World Maritime Day is a reminder that international goals gain their meaning through implementation. For the maritime sector, this means building strong connections between regulation, research, technology, expertise and everyday practice.
Who Leads the Future Maritime World? will take place at Rauma Hall on 27 October 2026. The event is open to everyone.
